On a late afternoon this past year I drove out to the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge in California and parked in the viewing area.  Small flocks of geese and ducks with black coots were busy feeding in the shallow water.  Approaching the water’s edge, I heard the “chik, chick, chu-u-u-u-u-u-r” of a bird, loud and clear. Searching in the dry rushes, I finally spied a tiny marsh wren with its upturned tail clinging to a stalk of thistle, singing with all of its might!

The Chippewa people, when gathering wild rice, named this little songster “O-du-na-mis-sug-ud-da-we-shi” meaning a big noise for its size. No wonder! The male can sing his bold song even while in flight and land without missing a single note.

With our voices we, too, can praise our Creator as in Psalm 92:1-5 “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night, on an instrument of ten strings, on the lute, and on the harp, with harmonious sound for You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. O Lord, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep.”

“Heavenly Father, teach us the lessons we need to learn from Your creation by attentive listening.  May we, also, read Your Word and hear your voice speaking to us through that Word. With a bold song in our heart, we will praise You in all of our challenges in this life.”
